- Notes
-
The overall quality of the action in this tournament was excellent.
Jenkins and Hamaker, though they were not favorites, are serious and skilled fencers. They rightfully earned their births in the finals.
Both Stevens and Beaven were undefeated in their preliminary pools. Beaven was very active in the fencing club, while Stevens' schedule did not allow club participation.
Stevens' sword hand was severely bruised by a strong hit early during her first bout in the final round against Hamaker. She courageously continued to defeat Hamaker and subsequently eliminated Jenkins. By the time she reported to the strip for the championship bout, she was obviously in debilitating pain from her swelling hand, but chose to continue and quickly fell to Beaven.
Stevens is the only fencer to ever be awarded both the Elite Swordsman and Superior Swordsmanship Awards.
As both Beaven and Stevens were among the most dedicated, agile-minded, surgical fencers to ever complete the class, I am certain that the final bout would have ranked among the greatest in class history were it not for Stevens' unfortunate injury.
