Notes

The overall quality of the action in this tournament was excellent.

Lusk, a tourney favorite along with Harris, Cooper, and Jonathan C. Worful, reached an expected end, but not without having fight off extremely trying challenges from the surprising Meyers and the always-tough-as-nails Harris. Lusk was actively involved in the fencing club throughout the class.

Harris, a tourney favorite, fought admirably throughout the tourney before falling to a slightly more patient and less frustrated Lusk. Another day, Harris may have won. Harris was actively involved in the fencing club throughout the class. Interestingly, Harris and Lusk were roommates.

Meyers, an agressive but rather uncontrolled fencer most of the semester, demonstrated thoughtful and dynamic strategic planning to place himself in contention for the championship. Most impressive was his relentless determination, as many times during the tourney he was forced to come back from two or three points down in order to win a bout.

Cooper, the leading tourney favorite and one of the most natural swordsman this instructor has ever known, suffered an inexplicable breakdown during the tournament. Incredibly, Cooper nevertheless managed to qualify for the finals despite his horrific form. However, he was relegated to fourth place by a one-touch loss to the eventual second place finisher, Harris.

Jonathan C. Worful, a tourney favorite, found himself in a pool with both Harris and Cooper. Subsequently, he missed qualifying for the finals by two indicator points. Worful returned to serve as the club's president during the next semester before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in the summer of '98.

Jeanette M. Hunter made class history by successfully disarming her male opponent and having the presence of mind to lunge into his torso before his weapon hit the floor to score the touch. This instructor has never before or since witnessed such a feat.
