Notes

The overall quality of the action in this tournament was fair.

Milano, a solid but not previously exceptional fencer, brought everything he had learned together to take the tourney. His effort is commendable and the result well-deserved.

Baker, an accurate fencer, fought without obvious flaw — even in losing the championship bout to Milano. His admirable effort fell only to Milano's exceptional performance. Baker performed consistently throughout the class despite not being involved in the fencing club, relying instead on his obvious natural ability. Additionally, Baker was murderously focused on every point. His effort is to be applauded.

Valentine, who with Mark. A. Harpole was the leading tourney favorite, was visibly ill throught the finals. He was leading Milano 4-3 in a semi-final bout when he was forced to leave the strip due to his illness. He could not return and therefore forfeited the bout and finished third. Valentine was highly active in the fencing club throughout the class and returned the following semester to serve as its president. He has devoted much of his time and efforts to the study and practice of fencing, tempering his natural ability with a great deal of sweat. After demonstrating extraordinary teaching and leadership skills in multiple fencing environments, he was enlisted as the fencing class' assistant instructor in August, 1998.

Wiley, a tourney favorite, fell to Baker in a closely contested semi-final bout. He was very active in the fencing club throughout the class.

Trisha Hooper, who served as Treasurer of the fencing club during the 1998 fall semester, fought the tourney with a pulled hamstring. She qualified for the finals in place of Harpole and fought bravely, but failed to place.

Mark A. Harpole easily won his pool, garnering a #2 seed in the finals. However, he was unable to participate in the final round. Harpole was very active in the fencing club throughout the class, and posessed obvious natural ability.

The entire class was looking forward to a tense championship bout between the two dynamic leading favorites Valentine and Harpole. It is very unfortunate that this confrontation did not even come close to occuring.
