- Notes
-
The overall quality of the action in this tournament was excellent.
Hamlet, a solid but not previously exceptional fencer, unexpectedly marched to supreme victory, beating three several good fencers in the process. As is often the case with tournament winners who were non-favorites, she was forced to fight back from significant deficits many times and on each occassion succeeded. Norma holds the distinction of being the first and only female champion in six Slinging Steel tournaments.
Hailston, a bright and agile fencer, fought extremely well throughout the tournament and only tasted defeat in her bout with the tourney champion. Hailston gained skill and confidence each class leading up to the tourney, eventually making herself a favorite. Hailston is a fast fencer who also sports tight actions. She is a naturally agressive fencer.
Miller, a tourney favorite, was simply brilliant until Hailston edged her in a semi-final bout that ended her glorious run. Like Hailston, she is a furiously fast fencer who keeps her actions accurate. She is also a naturally agressive fencer and highly self-controlled.
Quertemous, also a tourney favorite, was predictably agressive in forcing his long lunges into his opponents' torsos, but eventually fell to the quicker actions of Hailston and Miller.
H. Jim Turley, who developed the fastest and most accurate direct and counter parries this instructer has ever seen in a new student, was deadly throughout the preliminaries but fell to Quertemous' long attacks early in the finals and therefore failed to place.
Crystal L. Rose, a fiery, devoted fencer who is one of the most agressive female students this instructor has ever known, performed very well the entire semester and was certainly a favorite. However, she had a disasterous tourney and failed by one touch to qualify for the finals.
Women thoroughly dominated this tourney, and this instructor believes that their unusual agressiveness had more than a little to do with this result.
