Career Highlights

The events that I consider career highlights are not spetacular triumphs in prestigious tournaments (perhaps best explained by my lack of spetacular triumphs in prestigious tournaments), but rather performances in which I mentally reached down into my gut and pulled out everything I had in order to overcome (appetizing image, eh?). Though I've placed higher, I'm most proud of the following accomplishments:

— Contested first tournament less than three months after learning to fence. Fought the tourney, MSU's 1994 Spring Steel, wearing partial wrist and knee braces. Took 2nd in epee against much stronger, veteran fencers and received treasured accolades due to this performance.

— After a one-year layoff due to mononucleosis and other illnesses, returned to competition in November, 1995 by placing in foil and epee at MSU's Racer's Edge. (Unable to contest sabre on day 2 due to schedule conflict.)

— After a three-year absence from competition, took 2nd in foil to arch-nemesis and High King of Foil Flicking, Tim Adams. ("I haven't managed to beat that guy in foil yet.") at MSU's 1999 Alumni Open. Out of shape and out of gas, proceeded to embaress self and club while panting grotesquely and struggling to hold other two weapons while other club members mercilessly beat me into the gymnasium floor. I shall return.

— Proudly bears scars from all three weapons resulting from bouts with Spencer "I may lose, but you're sure gonna know you've been in a fight" Cooke.

Quotes

"Fencing, like any other skill, is best attacked with devotion and diligence rather than mere talent. A single year of fervent study and practice will propel a man or woman of average physical ability into clear superiority over 75% of the competition. Unfortunately, I've yet to discover what it takes to glide like Tim Elder."
